I’m so glad you started this Substack, and love reading your posts here. Not sure I entirely agree with this “capitalocentric” view of the fandom/ industry (we do have agency and opportunities to create our own spaces and resist this pull to the marketisation of our passion for reading I believe), BUT the point and arguments you’re making are excellent and very much needed!
I totally hear you! I may have expressed myself in a way that implied I think it's unfixable - I largely agree with you actually, in that we can resist that pull. Where we may differ (though I'm not sure!) is that I grow increasingly unsure that that can happen on existing social media platforms... but I must also always acknowledge that A) some people are still having a great experience within the spaces they have carved out there, and B) most authors and other small business owners in general are trapped posting on there whether they like it or not! In any case I appreciate you for reading and commenting and I hope you're doing well!!

This is why I admire you so much. I know you've taken a step back from the filthy quagmire of social media (and good for you), but if you ever looked into the latest saga of fanfic "writers" not only using AI to write, but to write for a quicker entry into the pub pipeline and it's all so bleak and you're so right about everything. And a good, self aware person for turning down an opportunity few others would (and which I'm sure you'd excel at too in future because I trust you to put in the work). However, I know this sounds harsh and it isn't meant for hard working authors who do everything right, but not everyone needs to be publishing books and especially if you're AI generating fanfic just to get there. This is also me telling myself that I don't have to be a writer of fic just because I read so much of it now.
